Brother CP7500 Review with Deby from So Sew Easy

We are so excited to have Deby here from So Sew Easy. She is a fantastic seamstress and one of those amazing bloggers that sews for herself! She is fearless, and makes items with all types of fabric and everything always looks great. That’s why we were so surprised that her machine is a really down to earth, sturdy machine. Here’s Deby’s review of the  Brother CP7500 ! And be sure to scroll down to the bottom to find out about Deby’s newest sewing contest!

1. What brand and model machine do you have, and how long have you had it? Can you show us a picture?

I use a Brother CP7500 which I bought on a quick weekend trip to the US about a year back. I did some pretty thorough research and then ordered it online, and had it delivered to the hotel so I didn’t have to drag my husband around sewing shops.

She sits in the corner of the spare bedroom, usually surrounded by many of the projects I have got underway all at the same time. While her accommodation may not be smart or glamorous like some of the others we’ve seen here, she has the best view and gazes out onto the beach and the Caribbean sea.

2. Are there any features that you love about your machine? Is there anything that makes you want to throw your machine out the window?

I know it sounds silly, but my favorite feature is the needle threader. Since starting sewing just under 2 years ago, my eye-sight has hit those middle-aged years and some mornings I can barely see the needle, even with my specs on. Sewing would be a struggle without being able to easily thread my needle.

The machine also came with a pretty good sized extension table and I use this all the time unless I’m sewing sleeves or necklines. Laying the fabric out flat next to the needle helps to get a good finish I think. Plus, this machine came with a dazzling array of presser feet already included.

But what don’t I like? This machine will NOT SHIRR. I have read every online article and watched every YouTube video, tried every combination of settings and tensions and this machine will NOT shirr. I still think I’m probably doing something wrong – it’s not her fault.

3. If your machine suddenly disappeared — what would you look for in a new machine?

Firstly, I would panic and run around screaming! NOOOOO! I live on a small island, and can’t buy a sewing machine here so it would need a flight to the USA to replace it. So that suddenly makes a sewing machine a very expensive item. As a sewing blogger, it’s my second most essential tool after my computer and I simply don’t have a site if I don’t have a machine. But once I had finished panicking and sobbing, I think I’d sit down and make a list of essential features that would probably look a little like this:

  • Good sturdy make and reliable brand
  • Needle threader
  • Plenty of feet come with it as standard (unless it can use my existing feet)
  • Good selection of stitches for use with knit fabrics including overcasting stitches
  • Needle down feature
  • An extension table
  • Fits in my carry-on wheelie case.

Dream features:

  • Built in air-conditioning feature for sewing on very hot days
  • ‘Back in Time’ button for undoing silly sewing mistakes
  • Sand guard and sun light compensation that allowed me to sew on the beach
  • Built in video camera so I can make tutorial videos as I sew

In short, I’m so delighted with my machine I would track one down and buy the same model.

4. Would you recommend this machine to your best friend? Is there any other advice about sewing machine shopping that you would give her?

I’ve had no trouble with this machine, other than the lack of shirring, so yes, I would certainly recommend it to everyone. It’s my first real sewing machine so I’ve got nothing really to compare it with so I would certainly suggest she does her own research too. There is so much information available online – Amazon is awesome for looking at sewing machine reviews, even if you then decide to buy from your local store.

5. What is your favorite project that you made with your current sewing machine?

Now that’s a difficult one. I’m still quite new to sewing so everything I make is better than the last and my latest project is usually my favorite. What I love is that this machine has easily tackled everything I’ve thrown at it, from knit fabrics for my Wrap Dress, to quilting projects like my Long Arm Oven Mitts to thick and bulky bag seams on my Carry All Bag.

Wrap dress pattern - free sewing pattern. Easy to sew and great looking wrap dress - everyone should have at least one of these. From So Sew Easy. A long arm oven mitts pattern - now I'll never burn my wrists again! Carry All Bag

6. If your sewing machine could be any other color other than what it is now, what would it be?

I would love for it to be a blue color that reflects the clear blue sky and the clear blue sea out of my window, probably also decorated with decals of tropical fish so I feel I can combine the feel of my two favorite hobbies (sewing and scuba diving) both at the same time.

What a beautiful image! We’d all love to sew with a view like that! Thank you so much, Deby for sharing about your machine. Now– be sure to head on over to Deby’s blog and check out her Make It Yours contest.

To enter you simply have to make a clutch with the free pattern from her blog. The catch? You get to dress it up and make it unique. The clutch is super cute, and would make a great Mother’s day present (for you, or for your mom!)

Bring your A game– because I’ll be entering too!

Thank you so much for allowing me to share a little about my sewing machine and projects with your readers. It’s true, its not a fancy machine and I hope it reassures people that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to be able to sew well. It’s just a tool, so its the skill behind using the tool that creates the end result, not just the tool itself.
